A Year in Review: Burnout, Moral Injury, Vicarious Trauma, PTSD, and the COVID-19 Pandemic
It has been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. For many, it has been a year of struggle, internalized trauma, and suffering in silence.
As Emergency Physicians, we are not new to burnout. We know and live with serious stressors every day and witness the accumulation and eventual burnout of our colleagues. With the new stressor of a pandemic, we must understand the limitations of current mitigations, explore and pinpoint our traumas and injury, and work together to create an environment where help is encouraged and structural interventions are built.
